Amy Rehab

Amy Winehouse wrote and sang the song “Rehab” in 2006. This song as well as “Wake Up Alone” were two demonstration tracks which were on the Mark Ronson’s New York Radio Show on East Village Radio. Amy signed up under the record label Island/Universal and became a professional singer at the young age of 16. She received her first guitar at the age of 13 and formed her first group called Sweet-n-Sour when she was only 10 so it looks like singing was in her blood. She comes from a family of jazz musicians. Her Father is a taxi river and her mom is a pharmacist. Amy was born on September 14, 1983 in Southgate, Enfirld, London. Amy sings English soul, jazz, and R&B music. She was influenced by singers such as Elvis Presley, The Shirelles, Carole King, Mahalia Jackson, The Ronettes, Kiss, Madonna, The Shangri-las, Ella Fitzgerald, Thelonious Monk, Toots and the Maytals, Tony Bennett, Anouk, The Specials, Sarah Vaughan, Mos Def, Teena Marie, Beastie Boys, Busta Rhymes, and Prince. You can see here that she had a wide range of influence in her life.
Amy’s debut album, Frank, was released in 2003 ans it was nominated for the Mercury Prize. She is a two time Ivor Novello Award winner. She one in 2004 with her single “Stronger Than Me”, and again in 2007 for the first single (“Rehab”) from her second album Back to Black. In February 2007 she won the Brit Award for the Best British Female Artist. Her album Back to Black was one of the 12 albums on the 2007 list of Mercury Prize nominees.
Amy’s song “Rehab” is a song about a girl who needs help because she is addicted to drugs and alcohol but is confused because she doesn’t know how to get the help she needs and is not sure if she wants to. Her father tries to get her to go to rehab as well as others but she refuses to go. She tries to convince herself to go but she says no. It appears to be a girl who is very mixed up and needs professional help as soon as possible because she has hit an all time low in her life. This sone may not be about the writer/singer Amy but it appears that she knows who it is about.
Here are some of the lyrics to the song. You be the judge:
They tried to make me go to rehab
I said no, no, no
Yes I been black, but when I come back
You won’t know, know, know.
I ain’t got the time
And if my daddy thinks I’m fine
He’s tried to make me go to rehab
I won’t go, go, go.
I don’t ever want to drink again
I just, ooo, I just need a friend
I’m not gonna’ spend 10 weeks
Have everyone think I’m on the mend.
