Health Insurance

Health insurance can be a nightmare when trying to choose the right one suited for you and your needs. The easiest way to begin is probably to do some research about the company or companies you are considering and do a comparison of the companies to see which one offers the best coverage at the most reasonable price. Some employers provide insurance coverage for their employees but in some cases the employees can choose which plan or what coverage they want or need, or can afford. In some cases the employee has to pay a portion of the premiums while the employer pays part of it. In some cases, the employer pays all of the premium, although this is very rare. Many people do not have health insurance because their employer does not offer it to their employees or the premiums are so expensive that the individual can not afford to pay them.

The idea of health insurance was first introduced in 1694 by Hugh the Elder Chamberlen. In the later part of the nineteenth century health insurance was known as disability insurance. That is because it only covered the cost of emergencies for injuries that might lead to disability. This type of insurance was the only one available until the beginning of the twentieth century when insurance methods began to change in some areas such as California. In the mid twentieth century health insurance changed to what we know it as today. Today there is comprehensive, private insurance programs which cover routine, preventive, and emergency health care as well as some prescription drugs. Health insurance today is also very expensive and that is largely due to the fact that healthcare costs have risen so much. There does not seem to be any control over the costs of medical bills and in many cases, people are charged double or for services they did not even get. The government needs to crack down on fraudulent charges so insurance is not so expensive. If this was controlled, maybe more people could afford their own health insurance. Most healthcare providers will fill out and submit the insurance forms for their patients. Also some providers will agree to a payment which is reasonable and will waive the rest of the bill.

A health insurance policy is the agreement between the company and the individual stating the provisions of the policy and what is covered and what is not covered in the policy. It also explains any co-payments or deductibles required. Deductibles are usually on a yearly basis and the amounts vary depending on the policy and the company. The deductible has to be paid before the insurance company kicks in and begins paying on the medical bills. Some policies only pay a percent of the expenses and the individual is responsible for the rest which can be a very substantial amount at times.
