Ephedra Supplements There were many ephedra diet supplements available before the Food and Drug Administration got ephedra banned in the United States for the second time in 2006. There are now many good alternatives to help you with your diet that are all natural and are much safer than ephedra. Some companies have replaced ephedra with other herbal supplements and some have discontinued their products which contained ephedra. Ephedra was proven to be very dangerous for some to use. There were serious health issues such as heart attacks, strokes, and even some deaths associated with ephedra products. Ephedra was being used as an energy booster, weight loss product, as a sports performance booster, for medicinal purposes for asthma, common colds, sinus congestion, lung and bronchial tube congestion, fever, and other health problems. The Chinese have used ephedra for over 5,000 years as a medication for lung ailments. Ephedra was also used by the Native Americans, Mexicans, and Mormons for medications. Ephedra is known by several different names. It is also called Chinese Ephedra, Ma Huang, Mormon Tea, Squaw Tea, Epitonin, and Desert Tea. Ephedra is a shrub herb which is found in the desert regions around the world. There are four different members of the ephedrine family. They are Ephedrine, Nor-pseudo-ephedrine, Nor-ephedrine, and Pseudo-ephedrine. Each has its own purpose. Ephedrine was used as a medication and acted much like adrenaline. It is less powerful than adrenaline but lasts much longer. Nor-pseudo-ephedrine is found in over the counter medications. It has effects like amphetamines as does Nor-ephedrine. Pseudo-ephedrine is the weakest of them all but still acts much like an amphetamine and still can be dangerous to use. Some of the side effects reported from the use of products which contained ephedra were heart attacks, strokes, high blood pressure, rapid heart beat, irregular heart beat, insomnia, anxiety, psychosis, tremors, nausea, vomiting, itching, hives, allergies, nervousness, death, and more. There were over 1,000 reports of hospital emergencies and at least 17 deaths reported to the FDA from 1997 until 2006. There had been many other reports before that. The FDA showed the court proof than even when taken in as small as 8 mg amounts, ephedra caused heart attacks and strokes. The FDA had some of the products tested for ephedra content and some of them contained more ephedra than what was stated on the labels. Others contained less ephedra and some contained no ephedra at all. Some of the products which contained ephedra but have replaced ephedra with other ingredients are Ripped Fuel, Metabolife, Metabolite, Metabolift, Trimspa, Ultimate Orange, Ripped Force, Diet Fuel, Xenadrine, Shape-Fast Plus, Everslender, Energy Fuel, and many more. One of the ingredients which replaced ephedra in some diet products is Hoodia Gordonii. Hoodia is one of the most sought after weight loss supplements on the market today.
