Symptoms of Depression

Some of the symptoms of depression are: feelings of sadness, irritability, or tension, lack of interest in usual activities or hobbies, lack of energy or feeling tired, change in appetite with weight loss or weight gain, change in sleeping patterns, restlessness, decreased ability to think or make decisions, feelings of hopelessness, guilt or worthlessness, thoughts of suicide or death. If you are experiencing any of these symptoms, talk to your doctor to see if you might be suffering from depression.

Other symptoms can occur at different specific times such as seasonal disorder( such as winter blues), postpartum depression (after giving birth), dysthymia ( a mild form of depression which may last up to several years), and Bipolar disorder (a mood disorder). There are many forms of depression so there are different medications to relieve the patients of their depression. Depression can be caused by many things. It has no specific cause, it is a mixture of more than one thing which causes the onslaught of depression. You may get depressed and have no idea what caused it. It can be caused from stress, or trauma caused from the loss of a family member or friend, you may be having financial problems, a breakup of a relationship, or any other stressful thing that can happen in ones everyday life. Any number of things can cause the depression to set in and you may have it for a while before you realize it.

Depression can affect anyone although it affects women more than men. The higher risk in women may be due to hormonal changes they go through. Men who are suffering from depression are likely to go undiagnosed and they are less likely to get help. They are more apt to look to drinking or drugs to solve their problem and it only adds to the problem. They will get angry or hostile and may become suicidal and are four times more likely to kill themselves than women are. The elderly people are often diagnosed with depression because of losing a loved one and living alone. They could very well become physically ill because they fail to eat right or take care of themselves properly because they just don’t care. Often their depression is not diagnosed because they will not discuss it with anyone so they do not receive treatment for their depression.

If you see a doctor and they give you an antidepressant for your depression, make sure you give it time to work for you. There is no overnight cure for depression. It took a while to get where you are so it will take a while to get you back where you should be. It may take up to four weeks or more before you notice a change in your mood and maybe longer before you feel the full effect of the medication.
