Cognitive Therapy for Depression Mindfulness based cognitive therapy offers an innovative way to break the cycle of recurrent depression and to help you control your present depression. Depression is a major public health problem because the number of people suffering from depression has more than doubled in the past fifteen years. There are over twenty five million adults and over eight million children suffering from some form of depression. Cognitive therapy consists of eight sessions of group therapy and the therapist can teach the patients how to turn a negative action or thought into a positive one. If the patients can do this and control their present depressive conditions, they can control their future and will not have relapses of depression. Cognitive therapy is now helping many people and is fast becoming the favored treatment for depression because there are no medications needed and therefore no side effects. An effective group treatment for preventing the relapse of depression is welcome news for patients, physicians and managed care companies. Anytime there is an alternative to medication that works as well as this group therapy does, it is more than a welcome answer to fighting depression. If you are suffering from depression and are interested in cognitive therapy, talk it over with your doctor. Maybe if they do not offer it as an alternative yet, they will know of a doctor who does. There are also things like ‘self help’ that you can do to help yourself get through depression along with the doctors recommendations. It is a good idea not to spend much time alone. Take a walk or go shopping every day, just to get out into the public. Talk to your family and let them know how you feel and what symptoms you are having. Ask them to help you with the chores more at home while you get through this. Some of the symptoms of depression include feelings of sadness, tired a lot, feelings of hopelessness, restlessness, worthlessness, guilt, trouble concentrating or making decisions, appetite disorder (eating more or less than usual), weight disorder (weight loss or gain for no apparent reason), sleep disorder (trouble sleeping or sleeping too much), thoughts of death or suicide. If you experience one or more of these symptoms, you should seek the help of a professional as soon as possible to get some treatment started. The sooner you begin treatment, the sooner you can get back to the life you enjoy. Cognitive therapy may be the answer for you so talk to your doctor and get treatment started right away. There is no reason to be ashamed of being depressed so do not be afraid to ask for help. All Text Copyright © dmcrecycling.com |
