Anorexia In Men

Although anorexia is found mostly in females, men can become anorexic too. About 10 percent of those diagnosed with anorexia are male. One in six people diagnosed with anorexia are men or boys. Many people begin to get anorexic in their teen years and sometimes younger although it is rare. Teens have so much peer pressure to be thin or to do well in sports that they often stop eating to become what someone else thinks they should. Coaches for sports activities are not completely blameless here. They put the kids through rigorous exercises plus expect them to stay away from greasy foods and sweets. Needless to say the person, who has a low self esteem or is determined to be what the coach wants them to be, stops eating and does excessive exercise to achieve the goal expected of them. If the person is overweight and gets teased a lot about his looks he might stop eating or eat much less to lose weight so that he will ‘fit in’ with the crowd. The only problem is that it doesn’t stop there. The person in question keeps up the routine and loses even more weight and before they know it they are real thin with health issues. It is much harder to see an anorexic male because most people do not look at them as anorexic. They do not realize that the boys and some men have anorexic problems too.

Reasons that might cause the anorexia is certain transitions such as a change in schools, home or job, and breakup of a relationship, or the death or illness of a loved one. Change can bring on emotional stress. and the only way some can cope with it is to control their eating by eating very little or getting rid of the food that they do eat by vomiting, laxatives or enemas. Wanting to excel at sports, work, or other activities can cause eating disorders which can lead to anorexia or bulimia. The media and society can be cruel when they make a person feel that they have to lose weight in order to look like the models, actors, and actresses they see on television and in magazines. The frequently pictured skinny people lead the public to believe that we all should look like that. If there is a low self esteem the person can be sucked into the imaginary world of thinness. They are always watching what they eat and how much they eat. They are always thinking they are fat. The anorexia controls them after a while and the only way to stop it is for it to be diagnosed by a doctor and treatment given.
